4us001.jpgI’ve lived in the Akron area for almost 40 years now. During that time I’ve had the privilege of working with some extremely talented singers, songwriters, and musicians. Many of these players would put the latest crop of corporate sponsored, cookie cutter “talent” that we hear on the radio to shame. In fact if someone were to pool this talent I think we could give Motown a run for their money. Right here in little ol’ A-town.

So I was pleased when my boy Kev brought over this disc titled The Get Away from a group he’s been working with called 4 Us. They are made up of three main players: Tommy Portis on Keyboard and vocal, Mery White on lead and background vocals, and Junior Brown on sax and flute. They use a number of session players on the recording including local legend Ben Powers.

I don’t know much more about them other than what’s on the liner notes, but I do know that I’m digging this disc. Most groups can come up with a couple of catchy originals to put on a disc but I’m impressed with the consistancy of their writing throughout nearly an hour of music. That said, I won’t get into a detailed review but will let the music speak for itself. Here are a hand full of cuts from the disc.
